Super Spirit Bros. (7/29/2019)

Dear friends and family,

It's hard to keep up with all that's going on...there's so much to say but I don't really know anymore how to tell about it.

My new companion, Elder Hacking, is a cool guy who's REALLY good at art. I'll have to show more of his stuff sometime. He's also played a lot of the new Super Smash Bros. game which wasn't even announced when I left. In missionary work he's really bomb at bringing the Spirit, which is sweet.

We started teaching a woman named Ashley who is friends with and is currently living with a recent convert. She has already been taught but had been dropped for a while, but we had asked her if she wanted to be taught again and she said yes. Previously I had heard her say that her only real thing was "I just won't give up coffee." Haha but we have had two really cool lessons with her and she came to church yesterday which was awesome.

We also managed to get the 15-year-old daughter of another guy being taught to come to the ward's Pioneer Day picnic on Saturday which was fun stuff. She came to church and now wants to keep coming and even plans on coming to Wednesday night activities!

We taught this super cool guy named Chris who lives in a junkyard. Yeah. He's sorta homeless BUT he has a job working at the place that owns the junkyard he lives in, which is way more than most homeless people can say. The Sisters had run into him and talked to him and gave him the Plan of Salvation pamphlet. Cool thing when we had our super spiritual lesson with him is, he said he glanced at the pamphlet and read about the pre-mortal existance and was surprised--he had never heard that before and said something to the effect of "I always kinda felt that was true." Pretty amazing. We are meeting with him again tonight!

Something cool I read this week about the importance of living prophets from the Old Testament student manual on how religion had become corrupted between the times of the Old and New Testaments:

"The oral tradition in many cases had come to overshadow the law. The temptation for the Jews during this period was to honor dead prophets over living ones. Dead prophets do not have power to say 'no,' any more than did the false gods worshiped by the Israelites in earlier times. Dead prophets call only past generations to repentance, or so it seems to those who reject the living ones. The word of God to dead prophets can be falsified, misinterpreted, and bent to where it has lost its power to bring people to the Lord. Individuals are able to maintain a false sense of piety and righteousness even as they reject the living oracles."

I definitely know that living prophets are super important and heeding their words is vital to staying connected with God. Hence the sad state of most modern-day Christians who do not follow the living prophets.

Dear friends and family, Jon was baptized on Saturday! This is my first baptism where I set things up and the person being baptized actually showed up to the baptism. Feels nice. And the next day I was able to confirm him a member of the Church. A first for me! We're very proud of Jon. He's come a long way. Elder Lewis and I have scheduled our year-mark temple trip, which will be this Friday. Because of how the rules work with us going to the temple (and since that was the only day we could get someone to drive us), this Friday will be our next P-day and we will not have a P-day next Monday. After that things should go back to normal. I'm very interested in/excited to go to the temple. On another note, since I've decided to head right into school when I get back, President Stratford has recommended a slightly early release for me (so I don't turn lazy again while waiting for school to begin) which will be... December 14th . So mark the date....

Hey guys, Cheryl was baptized this past Saturday! Wish I could have been there. I'm happy for her though. Just imagine me in the attached picture... S. Gifford Nielsen of the Seventy came to visit us this past week for our Zone Conference, which was pretty great. He and his wife had a lot to share with us, which I would essentially boil down to "be a good missionary". It was a great opportunity. We have an investigator named Godwin we are working with who is at present our closest investigator to baptism. He took notes while we taught him the Plan of Salvation! I love him. It's pretty exciting. I will let you know how it goes. This week I want to share two talks from President Nelson. I was asked to start preparing a talk for a sacrament meeting next month and for it I've been researching "the gathering of Israel", which I really knew almost nothing about before. "We've got your mission call." Whaaaat?

Dear family and friends, We had Zone Conference this last Thursday, and though I still have trouble getting excited about long meetings, it was good. After it ended, President Walker came up to me and pulled me aside. I assumed it was something about my two-transfer mission, because that had happened before. What I didn't expect was what he said next: "We've got your mission call." Whaaaat? I had expected it to come over two weeks later, as that was what happened to another two-transfer missionary. Apparently it isn't always the same! For those who have not yet heard, I am going to the Columbus, Ohio mission after this transfer ends on the 27th. We received a referral a few days ago. A woman named Brinca was going through a hard time and was inspired to look randomly at Snapchat, of all places. There she found some kind of ad for the Book of Mormon as a place to turn for peace. She saw she could call and order one for free, so she did, and it got ...
