Happy Monday!
Last Monday we had a crazy night for one reason;
one of our investigators was sick and we had leftover chicken noodle
soup from a ward potluck. The problem was, we seemingly would have to
walk it all the way over because we have no car. Elder Knowles felt like
that would not be a good use of our evening, however, but still wanted
to get the soup to the investigator. The solution? Carry the big pot of
soup as we bike. Yep. Elder Knowles rode full-speed carrying a big,
heavy pot of soup while biking hands-off the entire way. It was an
amazing feat. And we saw the blessings right away: because we did it
quickly instead of walking, we found some street contacts who were
really excited to talk to us. If we hadn't biked the soup over to the
investigator, we never would have run into them. Really cool. It was
also the first night I truly felt like representative of Jesus Christ,
which a missionary is supposed to be.
The family we street contacted that night is pretty cool. We have yet to meet them a second time, but I feel a strong desire to see them baptized. In addition, I feel the pressure of working to be a good enough teacher to give them their best offer to follow Christ. The Atonement will make up for my failure to give people the best opportunity they can get to accept the gospel, but it's still my responsibility to try my hardest.
I had my first Zone Conference! It was pretty cool. A missionary said something that stuck with me: the Atonement is how you access the Love of God. And the Gospel of Jesus Christ (faith, repentance, etc.) is how you access the Atonement. That's why it's all about Christ.
We also had a really good lesson with Alexis, a young mother who I basically met for the first time. We'd been trying to meet with her for weeks with no luck and I had basically given up on her. To make a long story short, she's been meeting with missionaries since 2016 and isn't progressing. We had some prepared material but she eventually told us how the main reason she isn't sure about joining the church is because her mother unexpectedly died recently, and she didn't want Alexis to join. At first while listening I was lost--our prepared material wasn't enough. I prayed: God, help me know how to help her! Thankfully, He did, and I think we gave her some helpful advice, to experiment upon the Word. We challenged her to try and gain a testimony of prayer, which we suspect is why she hasn't progressed.
I talked a bit last week about every member being a missionary. It's so important. There's no point to missionary work if every ward member doesn't do everything they can to be a friend to new converts. Too many wards aren't friendly and welcoming, and it's hurting the church. We can't be complacent. We ALL are representatives of Christ--Christ's church. Be good. Be kind. It's too important.
